Zune phone a possibility

Microsoft may be planning to transfer the multimedia software used on its popular “Zune” mp3 player lineup to smartphones.

According to a report from AdWeek, the software giant is now in the process of choosing an agency to help market a new product, code dubbed “pink”.

Representatives from Microsoft have not yet commented on the rumours, but it is likely that the project has something to do with helping boost the company’s standing in the smartphone industry. Its current operating system, Windows Mobile, only has 12% of the market and is losing ground to the iPhone, Symbian and BlackBerry.

There have also been rumours that Microsoft will release a “Zune phone” to rival Apple’s popular iPhone gadget. The rumours were helped by the news the company acquired mobile manufacturer Danger last year.
