The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will make a ruling by mid-June on eBay Australia’s plan to force users on to PayPal.
PayPal performs payment processing for online sellers, allowing them to accept credit card payments and money transfers without having their own merchant credit card accounts.
The policy, due to come into effect on 17 June, would mean direct bank deposits, cheques and money orders would be banned.
The ACCC has received 566 submissions, all of them against the proposal.
The consumer watchdog will investigate whether eBay Australia’s new policy of forcing all items to be paid for using PayPal, which eBay owns, or cash on delivery/pick-ups, breaches trade practice and competition laws.
The Reserve Bank of Australia may also weigh into the issue, which has angered tens of thousands of online buyers and sellers.
