THE NEWS WRAP: News Corp looks at splitting in two

Media giant News Corp has confirmed reports that it is considering breaking its business in two, sending shares to a one-year high.

 

Although the company would not say how it would be divided up, The Wall Street Journal, a News Corp publication, has reported that the entertainment arm, including the film and TV assets, would be separated from the newspaper and book publishing parts

 

Myer opens in Top End

 

Darwin’s economic growth has been highlighted by a decision by Myer to open a store in the city.

 

The new store, covering 12,000 square metres over two levels, will be the first full-line department store in Darwin, according to Bernie Brookes, Myer’s CEO.

 

Facebook email switch courts controversy

 

Facebook has provoked anger among some of its users after switching the email listed in profiles to its @facebook domain.

 

After users labelled the move “annoying”, Facebook said in a statement: “We are providing every Facebook user with his or her own Facebook email address because we find that many users find it useful to connect with each other, but using Facebook email is completely up to you.”

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 32.01 points, or 0.26%, to 12,534.67. The Australian dollar edged up to US100.62 cents.
