Toyota swings the axe on 350 Melbourne jobs

Toyota is today due to ‘swings the axe’ on the 350 job cuts in Melbourne, announced 13 weeks ago.

The employees will learn their fate today and tomorrow.

Toyota spokesperson Beck Angel said all workers had faced a review, and had been selected for redundancies based on a scoring process agreed upon by management and unions which takes into account skills and knowledge and behaviour.

“Management want to have one-on-one meetings with everyone, so that will be happening on a shop by shop basis,” Angel said.

Angel said the company’s decision to hire additional security guards over the next two days was “quite normal for a redundancy process”.

Axed worker Charles Allen, 41, said he was devastated to have lost his job after nearly two decades with Toyota.

“I’ve been coming here for 18 years and that’s all I know, so now I’ve got to look for something else,” Allen told Fairfax Radio.
