The new iPhone 3.0 update brought with it a suite of new features, including the ability to ‘tether’ the phone to a computer or laptop in order to access the internet.
Most telcos offer tethering capabilities for no cost, but now Optus is charging $9.95 for the new feature, along with multimedia messaging, on all of its iPhone plans.
The company has said the tethering fee will be an added cost along with the normal subscription plans. The 2GB Mobile-as-Modem pack will run for $24.99 per month, along with a 6GB plan for $44.99.
In the US, the sole carrier of the iPhone, AT&T, has refused mobile tethering altogether for the upcoming iPhone 3G S, saying the feature would use up too much of its network’s power.
