Phone calls will only be made over the internet instead of fixed telephone lines by the time the national broadband network is completed, according to one industry player.
iiNet chief technology officer Greg Bader says that research undertaken by the company shows more customers are turning towards voice-over-internet services to save money.
“People are looking for ways to make sure they are getting the maximum value out of their $50 or $60 spend each month for broadband,” he told news.com.au.
“VoIP was always a bit of a niche product, but now it has become bread and butter,” he says.
He also says that more than 10,000 residential customers are using the company’s voice over IP service with other programs like Skype, and that as internet speeds increase the move to internet calls will be unavoidable.
“Under the national broadband network, everybody’s phone will be VoIP. That’s not a bad thing, that is a fantastic thing. The rest of the world is moving that way; so should we.”
