Internet piracy is still alive and well, with the internet’s largest bitTorrent tracking service, The Pirate Bay, recently boasting its 15 millionth member.
Internet piracy is still alive and well, with the internet’s largest bitTorrent tracking service, The Pirate Bay, recently boasting its 15 millionth member.
The site, based in Sweden, has come under legal scrutiny and has faced a number of police raids in order to confiscate servers. The site points users to “torrent” files, which can be used by a software client to download data being uploaded by multiple users in order to achieve rapid download speeds.
BitTorrent has surged in popularity since the technology was developed in 2001, and is one of the main methods of internet piracy for downloading films, music and even books. The Pirate Bay records over 230 million searches a month.
A Pirate Bay co-founder under the name TiAMO says he is happy with the increase in traffic on the site’s blog.
