It’s one thing to have an intention to balance one’s life; and quite another to actually measure your success here or not. Here’s just the tool for this job…
He is such a great example of success in business and also of someone who is very conscious of the importance of having his life in balance.
I have not heard many entrepreneurs speak with such passion about the need to focus on many aspects of our lives if we want to be truly successful – so I will, with his permission, pass on one of the great ideas he uses to check up on his own status and progress.
It’s such an easy tool for you to use. It’s called the wheel of life and it has eight spokes – the spokes are:
- Health.
- Primary relationship, partner.
- Family-parents, children etc.
- Community.
- Religion.
- Career.
- Financial wellbeing.
- Spiritual-soul.
The perimeter of this wheel is 10 and you can rate yourself out of 10 on each of these aspects of life – if you get say seven for each spoke, the wheel may not be perfect but it’s in balance and can rotate. If career is 10 but health is two, for example, the wheel will be very imbalanced, etc etc.
The exercise continues. You can write down your goals for each of these sectors:
- The reason for these goals.
- The likely obstacles to achieving these goals.
And of course you can revisit the wheel and see how quickly and smoothly you can keep it going. Simple great idea.
I have always just divided life into four parts – financial, spiritual, physical, emotional – but I prefer the wheel concept. It’s a little more definitive.
But of course we have to be honest with ourselves in doing the check up!
