Apple rumour confirmed: Mozilla Firefox is coming to the iPhone and iPad

Mozilla has confirmed rumours it is in the process of creating a version of its Firefox web browser for iPhones and iPads, revealing its alternative to Apple’s Safari is in the pipeline.

While Mozilla has long offered a version of Firefox for Android smartphones and tablets, in the past Apple has had a policy of blocking third-party web browsers from its app store.

Apple has also put restrictions around apps using its own Javascript engines, meaning any third-party web browser prior to iOS 8 would have been slower than Safari.

However, in a blog post, Mozilla revealed it is now re-examining the possibility of putting Firefox on Apple devices.

“At Mozilla, we put our users first and want to provide an independent choice for them on any platform. We are in the early stages of experimenting with something that allows iOS users to be able to choose a Firefox-like experience,” the company said.

But Mozilla cautions it is “just starting to experiment” at this point, meaning a full release version could still be some way off.
