LG and Mozilla have launched the latest smartphone using the Firefox OS smartphone platform, the LG Fireweb.
The Fireweb uses a 4-inch screen and a 5-megapixel camera, which is an improvement on the other Firefox OS smartphone in the market, the ZTE Open, which uses a 3.5-inch screen and 2-megapixel camera.
The device will come preinstalled with a new version of the operating system, Firefox OS 1.1, which includes MMS support, push notifications, adaptive app search, the ability to add contacts from Gmail or Hotmail, music search, calendar enhancements and support for 15 languages.
The low-end smartphone will also come with built-in social networking integration through Facebook and Twitter, HERE Maps with offline capabilities, as well as Mozilla’s Firefox Web browser and Marketplace pre-installed.
As SmartCompany reported earlier this month, the device is one of a string of new devices LG is bringing out ahead of Christmas, including the Google Nexus 5, a curved screen smartphone and the already released LG G2 flagship.
Following Mozilla’s emerging markets strategy, the device will initially be offered in Brazil through Telefonica Vivo, and later in Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay ahead of a global release.
The device already boasts 50 apps aimed at the Brazilian market, including UOL, BOL, SporTV, Dieta e Saúde, Editora Globo, Galinha Pintadinha, Kekanto, Vivo my App and Vivo Chat.
Mozilla also posted the following video, showing key features of the device:
