Super-keen technology types have begun lining up outside the Apple store in New York in an attempt to be the first to get their hands on an iPhone, according to reports.

Gear Diary reported on Friday that a 10-person line had formed outside the Apple store for the week-long wait to get an iPhone, but judging by the photos the line has grown a fair bit since then.

There appears to be some question over just how genuine the queuers are, however, with some reports suggesting they care less about the iPhone than setting a world record for time in a line, and others that they are there for some kind of political stunt.

Whatever their purposes, the fact that people are lining up a week before the iPhone is released yet again highlights the very big hype surrounding this very small consumer product.

Although it’s not the first release and ample supply is expected, a queue has reportedly begun outside of Apple’s Fifth Avenue retail store to buy iPhone 3G a full week before its release.
