If our company is about to restructure, why are we being kept in the dark?

Dear Aunty B,

I think our company is about to undergo a major restructure.

The directors and senior executive team keep dropping hints in between having epic meetings. But when we ask them for details, all they say is “all will be revealed”.

For starters, I hate surprises, but not as much as I hate change!

But seriously, it’s killing morale. People don’t know if the restructure is positive or negative. Given the economy, most people are fearing the worst.

Should I confront management with my concerns?

Apprehensive,

Adelaide

Dear Apprehensive,

Can I ask you a question? Do you want to confront management to express your concerns about morale or do you really just want to find out what’s going on? My Aunty instinct tells me you’re probably just being a sticky beak.

Look, it doesn’t sound like the directors and the executives have handled this all that well. If they wanted to keep things secrets, they should have kept their traps shut!

My advice would be to have a quiet word with a director or an executive and let them know the natives are a little restless. Perhaps you should suggest that if they are going to keep dropping hints about a restructure, then some timetable of announcements should also be released.

But unfortunately, you’re going to have to suck up a bit of uncertainty while the bosses get their restructure organised. I am sure they want to have everything carefully planned so they can answer all the questions you and the rest of the team will have.

Be smart,

Your Aunty B
