Chipmaker AMP is set to launch an upgrade to its Bulldozer CPU architecture with a new CPU core, aimed at mobile devices, named Steamroller.
Hot Hardware reports that the company claims the new chip, which is set to be released in 2013, will boast improved energy efficiency with a 15% improvement in performance per watt.
While AMD has claimed that its Bulldozer series would improve energy efficiency, helping the company increase shipments over rivals including Intel and ARM, many critics believe it has failed to deliver on both counts.
The news comes as Intel, best known for its desktop PC processors, intends to use its Sandy Bridge processors to attack the low-power smartphone and tablet computer markets, which are currently dominated by ARM.
