Smartphone patent wars: Apple demands $US2.5 billion damages from Samsung

The patent dispute between Samsung and Apple continues, with the iPhone maker demanding $US2.5 billion in damages.

The move comes as part of settlement offers between the two businesses following patent disputes around the world.

According to Reuters, Apple believes Samsung’s proposal is unfair, given it demands a 2.4% royalty fee on devices that use protected IP – bringing its cut for each iPhone to about $US15.

A Samsung spokesperson told the news agency the rate “is consistent with the royalty rates other companies charge”.
