A pre-release version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for devices based on x86 processors is now available.
According to H-Online, it is intended as a replacement operating system for netbook and tablet devices.
Developers note that the code has been tested on a range of x86 mobile devices, including the Viewsonic Viewpad 10, Dell Inspiron Mini Duo, Samsung Q1U, and ASUS Eee PCs/Laptops. However, while most desktop PCs are built around x86 chips, external monitors are not currently supported by this release.
Nonetheless, the news adds to speculation that Google may release a desktop PC version of Android in the future.
