The re-election campaign for American president Barack Obama is now using the mobile payments gadget Square in order to accept fundraising donations.
The gadget, created by a company headed up by former Twitter chief executive Jack Dorsey, has soared in popularity over the past two years. The company is now handling millions of dollars’ worth of payments every month.
“Whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat, running for president or local assembly, Square makes it easier than ever for candidates, organisations and volunteers to fundraise for their cause,” a Square spokesperson told TechCrunch.
Square has been promoted as a mobile payments tool for start-ups who don’t have more advanced point of sale systems. Users stick the Square gadget into their iPhone or Android device, swipe a credit card, and then accept a payment with a signature.
