A record breaking 1.2 billion mobile apps were downloaded during the week between Christmas and New Years day, with 242 million downloads on Christmas day alone, according to estimates released by market research firm Flurry.
Flurry claims their figures are drawn from data collected from analytics code included in over 140,000 mobile apps, triangulated with official sales figures from Apple and Google.
According to TechCrunch, the figures mark the first time that more than one billion mobile apps have been downloaded in a single week, following the activation of nearly seven million new mobile devices on Christmas Day.
The figures also show that Australians downloaded 28 million apps during the Christmas and New Year period.
