Nokia releases first Windows handsets

Nokia has finally announced its first round of handsets that will be powered by the Windows Phone operating system, months after announcing a partnership with Microsoft.

Nokia chief Stephen Elop took to the stage in London to show off the new phones, called the Lumia 800 and the Lumia 710.

“It is a different company operating on a different clock speed,” Elop told Reuters, referring to a number of internal restructures. “The amount of effort and passion and work that’s been accomplished that we were able to show off today is the best evidence of that.”

Elop said both handsets would be able to stand out against competition due to their minimalist design.

The handsets are set to launch in Europe in the coming weeks – no international release dates have yet been announced.
