Microsoft ship two million Windows phones

Microsoft shipped about two million Windows Phone units during the fourth quarter of 2010 but it only sold 1.6 million, according to new figures from Gartner.

“Windows Phone saw only modest sales that reached 1.6 million units in the first quarter of 2011,” the research firm said in a statement. “Devices launched at the end of 2010 failed to grow in consumer preference and CSPs continued to focus on Android.”

However, Gartner says despite the slow start, Microsoft will eventually catch up – by 2015 it says Microsoft will be shipping 215 million units due to the partnership with Nokia.

It expects Microsoft to have the second highest market share behind Android. iOS is expected to fall behind as Android shipments increase.
