Google offers $20,000 in hacking contest

Internet giant Google is offering $20,000 and a laptop using the Chrome OS to any hacker who can take advantage of a security vulnerability in the Chrome browser.

As part of the Pwn2Own hacking contest, Google will be offering the prize to any hacker who can present the ability to take advantage of the vulnerability, using only code in the Chrome browser itself. The attack also has to escape the Chrome sandbox and infiltrate the rest of the system.

“Google will offer $20,000 USD and the CR-48 if a contestant can pop the browser and escape the sandbox using vulnerabilities purely present in Google-written code,” it was announced in the TippingPoint blog.

Contests will also be held to see if users can hack through Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari.
