How smartphone users find their apps

A new report from Nielsen reveals more American customers are using smartphones and the majority are using them primarily for apps.

The report, which includes several tidbits for advertisers, says “most Americans can’t imagine leaving home without their mobile phones”, with 25% respondents owning a smartphone that is “more powerful than the computers initially used to send men to the moon”.

The report claims that as of June 2010, 59% of respondents said they had downloaded a mobile app within the past month. Additionally, about 61% are using their phones for games.

The report also states app developers are facing more complicated challenges now markets have evolved and finding new programs is harder than ever. “One of the main challenges facing apps publishers is making sure consumers discover their apps,” it states.

This evolution has seen the rise of app aggregator websites and app review sites, allowing users to find apps tailored to their needs. It also means more app developers need to engage in traditional marketing and advertising methods.

The survey also found 40% said they found new apps directly on their smartphones, while 36% said they heard about new apps from friends and family.
