Google is continuing to catch up to Apple in the smartphone sector, with the Android 2.1 Éclair model now accounting for 59.7% of all Android devices, indicating users are keeping up-to-date with new releases.
Android 1.6 users accounted for just 20.3% of all handsets, with 1.5v users now accounting for just 15.3% of users, both of which have dropped over the past few months.
According to the latest figures, which were published on the Android blog, 5.5% of handsets are now using the 2.2 Froyo software, up from 3.3% last month.
The 2.2 penetration will continue, with a number of manufacturers saying they will roll out the software on their handsets during the remainder of the year.
The data comes after Google chief executive Eric Schmidt said last week Google is now activating over 200,000 Android-based handsets every day.
