Google chief executive Eric Schmidt told a press conference yesterday the company is now activating over 200,000 Android-based handsets per day.
That number is a significant increase from May, when it was only activating 100,000 per day. In June, that number jumped again to 160,000 units.
Schmidt said at the Techonomy conference in California that Android shipments have overtaken Apple shipments and stated the company is extremely impressed with how the operating system is performing so far.
He also said the Droid X is a major reason for the surge in Android’s popularity, and mentioned he is looking forward to seeing how the Samsung Galaxy performs.
When questioned about whether Android revenue is growing enough to keep the mobile project going, Schmidt said “trust me that revenue is large enough to pay for all of the Android activities and a whole bunch more”.
