HP to scrap tablet device

Computer manufacturer Hewlett-Packard has reportedly cancelled its production of its upcoming tablet computer, with reports suggesting the company is unhappy with the device’s operating system.

It comes as the Apple iPad has struck a chord with users as the first commercially available tablet computer, with a wave of competitors to release their own during the remainder of 2010.

A source has told tech blog TechCrunch that the device, which was first unveiled by Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer at CES in January, is currently underpowered and in need of an upgrade.

The company could be delaying the gadget’s release until next year in order to incorporate an updated version of the WebOS software, which it bought as part of its acquisition of Palm for $US1.2 billion.
