Facebook counts 50,000 websites using plugins in one week

Just one week after Facebook unveiled a suite of new features for developers to integrate their sites with the social networking giant, the company has said it counts 50,000 sites now using the new plugins.

The updates are designed so that sites can emulate features of the Facebook site on their own home pages, integrating user’s profiles in the process. The most popular of these is the “like” button, which thousands of sites are using to gauge whether users are approving of the content on their homepages.

The plugins are part of Facebook’s broader Open Graph API project, which will attempt to see elements of the Facebook platform on millions of websites.

While Facebook launched with 75 partners, the ability to add plugins is now open for any site. Small businesses are being encouraged to use them as they will open up new opportunities for social interaction and methods for customer feedback.
