The recent cyber-attacks directed at Gmail accounts and the websites of several American companies originated from Chinese colleges, the New York Times has reported.
The report claims investigators have found the attacks came from Shanghai Jiatong University and Lanxiang Vocational School. Jiatong has a prominent computer science program in its curriculum, while Lanxiang reportedly trains computer scientists for military work.
However, both schools have since said they have heard no reports anyone from either college have been involved in the attacks.
The attacks caused Google to discuss abandoning its Chinese operations, after saying it would not cooperate with the country’s censorship policies anymore. Unless the Chinese Government relents on its censorship, it seems the company may leave.
However, it is understood the Government is still in talks with the internet giant to arrange a compromise.
The Chinese Government has d
enied involvement in the attacks, but some analysts have continued to accuse the country of organising the attacks.
