YouTube releases most popular videos, search trends

Just after internet giants Google and Twitter have released their top search terms for the year, video sharing site YouTube has joined the trend and announced its most popular clips for 2009.

The site, which is owned by Google, said in its official blog it was sharing its most popular video lists for the first time.

“This year has been the biggest yet for online video, and for the first time we’re sharing our official Most Watched lists and some of the fastest-rising search terms on YouTube. Some moments were big …some small – but all of them inspired, entertained and connected millions of people around the world via YouTube.”

YouTube has surged in popularity over the last year with millions of users uploading and sharing their content. Additionally, businesses have been able to jump on the trend by monetising videos with advertisements.

While some of the videos are of large events, such as US president Barack Obama’s inauguration, many are small, personal videos which have gone “viral” – recording a surge in popularity in a short amount of time.

One such video is the “JK Wedding Entrance Dance”, which recorded a wedding party in the US dancing down the aisle to a song by R&B artist Chris Brown.

The video, which recorded 33 million hits, is also an example of businesses taking advantage of the site, with Sony Music placing iTunes advertisements for the song within the clip itself, prompting a rise on the music charts.

“Movie trailers (“New Moon,” “Watchmen,” “Paranormal Activity”) and inspirational moments (Susan Boyle, Usain Bolt) were popular, as were sensational celebrity scandals (Christian Bale, Kanye West and, most recently, Tiger Woods),” YouTube said.
