It was while on a European working holiday that Sydneysider Genevieve George came up with the idea for OneShift, a website that matches employees with employers for one-off shifts or casual or full-time work.

“I was finding it extremely difficult to find casual and part-time jobs on short notice in various countries,” George says.

“Sometimes I would be in a city for five days or so and really wanted a shift or two but this was almost impossible. I thought to myself, ‘How great would it be to have something online where I could enter my location and say, find me a job?’”

Back in Australia, and less than two years since launching, OneShift now has more than 200,000 users.

“The greatest challenge has been keeping up with the growth,” George says.

“OneShift is a jobs network which caters for all types of job seekers – young and old – and all types of businesses from different industries. Our database must always be changing and evolving to ensure that these different, diverse users are able to find appropriate jobs and skilled, quality staff.”

George says OneShift has a phone app due to come out and hopes to launch in New Zealand as her first move overseas.

She urges other young entrepreneurs to stay positive and optimistic.

“Sometimes I have to try and persuade my own staff that this idea can work,” she says.

“You’ll always have people say that it can’t be done, that targets can’t be met or that your idea could fail, but if you believe that it can work then make sure you stick with this idea and move forward.”
