New laws in Victoria means users of GPS devices and mobile phones will be fined for keeping the gadgets on their laps while driving.
From this November, all navigation devices and mobile phones must be used in a fitted holder or cradle, with the maximum fine of $234 plus three demerit points for any offense.
The new laws are a response to the number of smartphones on the market which contain complex GPS software kits. Roads Minister Tim Pallas told news.com.au the new punishments are designed to keep up with new technology.
“Talking on a hand-held mobile phone while driving is reckless and increases the risk of a crash fourfold,” he said. “The advice is simple – hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.”
