South Australian buses trial Wi-Fi

A new trial on South Australian bus lines began yesterday that will see metropolitan buses equipped with free Wi-Fi for travellers.

The concept has been scheduled by the South Australian Government for some time, with a number of technology companies invited to participate in the trial.

The Government expects advertising to cover the cost of equipping buses with Wi-Fi.

Cisco, Adam Internet and MIMP Connecting Solutions have helped to equip a bus over the past 12 months with Wi-Fi, with the actual connection “filtered” by Webshield.

The system has been tested by the University of South Australia Institute for Telecommunications Research. Other tech groups have proposed a similar schemes in other states, including a proposal for Wi-Fi on trains, but so far the South Australian endeavour is the only one to get off the ground.
