I am a big fan of the office door. I reckon it’s one of the most important weapons in the arsenal of the entrepreneur.
Need time to think? Go in your office and close the door.
Need to have a proper conversation with a staff member? Go into your office and close the door.
Need time to actually complete a task? Shut that door!
Another way I use my door is when I need to ration my energy.
I am a big believer in the idea that leaders need to give their teams a sense of energetic purpose. That energy might not always be positive – indeed, your Taskmaster can sling about a bit of negative energy from time to time – but I always try to have a sense around me that something is happening.
But I admit that it’s not easy. There are times when you simply don’t feel like you have any energy to give.
In these instances, use the door. Be breezy and upbeat to your team, tell them you’re going to work on something for a few hours and retreat to your office.
There, you can gather your thoughts and recharge your batteries.
Get it done – today!
