MeeMeep harnesses commuter movement

There’s a new online community where people who need something moved – but don’t want to fork out for a professional – can list the job.

At MeeMeep.com, “movers” who are regular commuters or going on a road trip can connect with “shakers” who need an item delivered.

Movers compete in a sort of reverse auction until the shaker accepts the best offer.

MeeMeep marketing manager Will Emmett says the site, which has brokered 350 deals since being quietly launched in October, essentially transforms everyday commuters into couriers.

“I thought, wouldn’t it be great if we could harness all that commuter movement and put it to good use?” Emmett says.

“[MeeMeep] harnesses the energy of all the trucks, cars, foot traffic and bikes already in motion, and puts it to good use in the social networking space.”

“Our payment system operates in escrow as well, so no one gets paid until everyone is happy.”
