Every entrepreneur should aim to be an expert in their niche – whether this is a public expert (that is, the type who appears on panels and writes for industry publications) or a private expert (that is, the type who is known by staff, customers and suppliers as a font of all knowledge).
The challenge of course for a busy businessperson is making sure you stay right up-to-date with the latest industry information and trends.
So here are few ideas.
If you are a public expert, and need fodder for blogs, posts and tweets, then it’s a great idea to set up some Google alerts on your sector. This way you’ll have a constant stream of news, opinions and trends that you can talk about. Relating overseas trends to your local market is a particularly good way of showing that you are on top of the latest market moves in your sector.
If you are a private expert, and are looking to mainly keep your staff, suppliers and customers informed, then keep a little file where you can put good articles or links. Make this file public for your staff so they can keep on top of the news and consider writing a little summary email to customers and suppliers every few weeks.
